What is a Defibrillator?
A defibrillator is a medical device that delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat in cases of life-threatening arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. It is commonly used in emergency situations to treat sudden cardiac arrest. There are different types, including **automated external defibrillators (AEDs)**, which are designed for public use, and **implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)**, which are surgically placed inside the body for long-term heart monitoring and correction. How do I use one?
There will be instructions on the device for how to use it. This will usually be in the form of audible instructions. If you’re on the phone to 999 then they’ll also be able to talk you through the steps.
