Mappington Mutt Striders 🐾

Tucked into the leafy lanes and winding footpaths of Mappington, the Mappington Mutt Striders are less of a formal club and more of a roaming pack of locals bound by muddy boots, wagging tails, and a shared love of the outdoors.

They meet every Saturday morning at the old stone clock in the town square—rain or shine (and in Mappington, often both). The group started a few years ago when a handful of dog owners kept bumping into each other along the same riverside trail. What began as casual chats turned into a weekly ritual, and eventually, a full-fledged community tradition.

The Striders don’t discriminate—dogs of all shapes, sizes, and temperaments are welcome. You’ll find everything from energetic border collies herding imaginary sheep, to elderly dachshunds trotting along at their own determined pace. There’s even a famously aloof greyhound named Jasper who only participates for the post-walk biscuits.

Routes vary each week but usually include:

  • The Willowbend Trail (popular for its shady canopy and squirrel sightings)
  • Bramble Heath (a favorite for off-lead runs and chaotic zoomies)
  • The Old Quarry Loop (steeper, but worth it for the panoramic view over Mappington)

There’s an unspoken rhythm to the walks—fast walkers drift ahead, slower ones linger behind, and everyone regroups at natural stopping points. Conversations range from dog training tips to town gossip to quiet appreciation of the scenery.

After each walk, many of the group head to a local cafĆ© where muddy paws are tolerated and water bowls appear without asking. It’s here that newcomers are truly welcomed, often with introductions like, ā€œThis is Bailey’s human,ā€ rather than the other way around.

The Mappington Mutt Striders aren’t about rules or memberships—just showing up, getting outside, and letting the dogs lead the way.
